Project Description

Goodwin Residence
Kitchen Remodel and Addition
1991 | Del Mar, CA

Addition Details

  • The original kitchen was very small for a home of this size and the original breakfast room was so small it could barely accommodate a 36″ round table with chairs for 4
  • Removing two exterior and one interior bearing walls in the corner of this home created a huge room for both the new kitchen and large breakfast area with lots of windows with ocean views
  • The addition did not add a lot of new square footage to the home, but it did change the shape of the rooms such that the exiting footprint combined with the new added space is a much more usable and functional
  • This new room appears much larger than one would expect from just the small 60 sq ft of this addition

Kitchen Remodel

  • This family does a lot of entertaining and needed a larger more functional kitchen
  • The addition opened the room up to allow enough space for a large island and a large breakfast table that seats six
  • The island has a prep sink with butcher block cover to create multiple work areas in the kitchen so guests can participate in the kitchen activities
  • Also housed in the island are a trash compactor and warming drawer
  • Wine storage was placed on the back of the kitchen island
  • A custom made wood hood with tile trim and 900 cfm exterior mounted vent motor was made to accommodate the Viking commercial style range
  • A custom made pot rack was mounted over the island
  • Display cabinets and doweled plate racks were built to the right of the main sink
  • Pass through to the family room with bar overhang connected the two rooms visually
  • A fold away computer system was built into a cabinet at the breakfast area so it could be available during the day, but closed off and hidden when entertaining of eating
  • Recessed halogen ceiling cans and florescent under cabinet lights with color corrected bulbs

Project Overview

This small 60 sf addition created a room that looked and functioned a lot larger than one would have expected by giving the room a more workable shape and more walls suitable for large exterior windows to capture the ocean views available to this home.
