Major Kitchen Remodel

  • To solve our clients design problem in this large old historic Mission Hills home we swapped the original kitchen area with a smaller adjoining family room
  • This move created a highly efficient kitchen with lots of counter space and storage, which would have been impossible to accomplish in the original kitchen without closing off windows
  • It also created a nicer and larger family room
  • This alteration created two rooms that looked and functioned more like they fit the flow of the home than the original room layout
  • To keep in character with the time period of the home, white painted classic framed cabinet doors was the look the client wanted. They wisely chose white thermo foil cabinet doors that have the white painted look at less cost and a much more durable, long lasting, and maintenance free finish
  • A raised eating bar at the cook top also functions to hide the pots and other items on the counters from the family area while still keeping the kitchen open to the family room for anyone working in the kitchen
  • Recessed halogen ceiling can lights, pendants over the eating bar, and florescent lights under and over the wall cabinets give this kitchen great functional and decorative lighting
  • We separated the cook top and oven so pots and pans could be stored under the cook top closer to where they are used
  • It created a separate baking area at the opposite end of the kitchen where the oven was built in below the counter top to maintain maximum work counter for the client
  • The microwave, which is not seen in any of these photos, since its view is hidden from the family room, is built in to the wall cabinets to the left of the built in refrigerator

Project Overview

This big historic Mission Hills home had an original kitchen area that was large, but broken up by 4 entrances and two large windows. The client was understandably reluctant to close off any windows to gain the wall space needed to make an efficient kitchen. It made more sense to them when we suggested moving the kitchen to a small adjoining family room and turn the old kitchen area into a new larger family room which would make more use out of the large windows and 4 entrances.
