On a previous recommendation, we had another firm do an overhaul of the two bathrooms in our home, and based upon their performance we were determined not to use them for the kitchen. Their schedules were unpredictable – often they worked only small fractions of a day, and other days didn’t come at all. While they were friendly, they didn’t communicate a credible schedule and stick to it. They began second and third “fronts” on the bathroom jobs before completing the first, so their progress wasn’t step-wise sensible. Even simple things, like suitably preparing walls for painting weren’t done, so that now a nick in the paint will result in large peals – there is no adherence.
They became aware of our desire to do kitchen remodeling, and involved an architect friend to do some design work and permit applications. Within less than a month we’d had enough. We had no decent design, nor had he obtained permits. It was at this point that our landscape architect recommended Dan. With no fuss, Dan disentangled us from the previous designer.
An early priority Dan conveyed was discussion on what we desired as the outcome of our remodel. Certain things were obvious: the many ceiling heights in the different rooms felt dated, as did the faux stone surrounding our fireplace and the lighting in each room. Other things were more subtle: Dan walked us through a discussion of the track between sink, stove, and refrigerator – a circuit we were oblivious to, and one we might have blundered afoul of without his help.
A point of concern for us was that we wanted all our changes to be covered by permits. Dan affirmed us in that area, and told, with examples, of the false economy of avoiding that small fee.
Dan gave us a very detailed schedule and agreed to payments at each milestone. Things we changed our minds about, like the shape and dimensions of the kitchen island he incorporated with no hassle. He helped at every step as we chose appliances and sought suppliers, a search, which ended with him introducing us to the best price source we found, one that beat even the lowest web-based sources.
Dan employs a team of expert craftsmen for each step of the remodel. The demolition team was fast, the roofers were quick and efficient, the electrical, plumbing, and slab-pouring went without a hitch. His flooring guy was exceptional – his tile work shows up flaws in previous work we had done years earlier. His painter was also great, and we used him afterwards to paint the whole house exterior. His cabinet-maker/finish carpenter was exactly what we would have asked for had we the knowledge to be specific. He impressed us even in cleanup, and worked with his son to leave behind a well-done job.
My wife and I have had to re-do a total of one task that Dan undertook, which was to replace a single drawer knob screw which was shorter than the rest.
We are absolutely pleased with Dan, his team, and his suppliers. If we undertake another such task, we will certainly use Dan.
