Kalafer Residence
Major Kitchen Remodel
1980 | Normal Heights, San Diego, CA

Kitchen Remodel Major Alterations

  • Removed a wall between the old laundry room and kitchen creating a larger, open room with more natural light.
  • A new stacked washer and dryer were relocated to an existing hall closet near the bedrooms so all the old laundry space could be added to the new kitchen which is still relatively small
  • See photos New Kitchen 1 and Old Kitchen 1 to compare before and after views of this wall that was removed and its effect
  • Look closely at the Old Kitchen 1 photo, looking thru the door at the rear left you will see another open door that was the old location for the home’s hot water heater
  • We moved the hot water heater outside the house into a new shed we built. That allowed us to create a new insulated temperature controlled wine storage area with insulated leaded glass on two doors. One facing the kitchen and one facing the living room.
  • Moved the rear door to the side of the new kitchen so it faces their driveway for easier access with groceries to the kitchen. See stained glass window on this door to match tile pattern
  • Added Garden window over new sink where the old laundry washer and dryer was located as seen in Old Laundry Room photo
  • Added new bay window to create breakfast area facing back yard. See Bay Window Breakfast photo and compare it to Old Kitchen 2 to see a before and after of the same view
  • Look closely thru the archway to the right of the hutch in the New Buffet & Pantry photo and you will see a custom made pantry added in the hall for additional storage for this still small kitchen
  • Numerous small florescent lights recessed into the ceiling with wood trim to match the cabinets

Project Overview

As you can see from the original pictures, this old Spanish style home in University Heights overlooking Mission Valley needed a major remodel of the kitchen. It was only natural to create a heavily Spanish style kitchen in keeping with the rest of the home.
