Von Herzen Residence - Kitchen Remodel, Green House Addition, & Deck (Tree House with a View)
La Mesa, CA

This Mount Helix home was a perfect setting for a green house addition facing the view. Why? Green house additions have one draw back - they trap the heat from direct sunlight. That makes a lot of sense in a cool or cold climate. So what is the purpose of building a sun room in warm southern California where you have to cover all the glass with shades to keep from burning up most of the year? That is a good question, unless your home is surrounded by large shade trees and your views are under the plumage of these tress as was the case for this client. Attention to architectural details insured that this Kitchen remodel deck and sunroom looked like it was a well designed part of the original home, both inside and out.

  • Von Herzen Residence, La Mesa, CA
    • Single Family Residence
    • Mount Helix Community
    • Project Date 1990
  • Green House Addition (Tree House with a View)
    • Having bad experiences with pre-made kit bought green house additions in the past we were only interested in doing this addition for the client if we were able to build it ourselves
    • The heavy structural wood used to build this green house addition actually fit the style of the house better than the common aluminum kit green houses, and we were able to assure it would not leak
    • Dual glazed laminated glass was used for the roof
    • Standard sized sliding glass doors and windows were used on the walls
    • To meet California earth quake standards a special built wall under this addition was used with special connectors to transfer lateral loads to the existing home structure
  • New Deck with Jacuzzi
    • A new deck with jacuzzi was built around an existing boulder and two trees to give this green house and deck the feeling of a tree house with a great view
  • Kitchen Remodel & Family Room Remodel
    • This kitchen is not particularly large, but the U-shape work counter with associated storage is extremely efficient
    • Oven, Refrigerator, Pantry, and desk are on the remaining wall for a kitchen that works and looks great
    • The client had a lot of problems with and existing masonry fireplace that they could never get to draft properly, so rather than rebuild it we simply covered it with a new prefab unit that was engineered with fans to blow heat into the room as well
    • An entertainment center was built to the left of the new fireplace
    • Hardwood floors were run at a diagonal to draw the eye to the view and to set off all contents in the rooms
    • A venting skylight was added in the kitchen for more natural light and ventilation
    • Halogen ceiling light cans and track lights over the counters and florescent under cabinet lights were installed
  • Kitchen Remodeling Details:
